Nicholas Payton

New Orleans-based trumpeter, composer, and Grammy-winner Nicholas Payton is one of
jazz's most diverse and broad-thinking instrumentalists. Over the years, he's performed
and recorded with such varied artists as Ray Charles, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry,
Wynton Marsalis, Jimmy Smith, Dr. John, Common, Jill Scott, and Trey Anastasio. Payton
has recorded seven albums as a leader and more than 80 as a sideman. His latest recording,
Sonic Trance, was nominated for a 2004 Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz
Album.

Gil Goldstein

Gil Goldstein’s extensive arranging credits include Michael Brecker, Randy
Brecker David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Milton Nascimiento, Wallace Roney, James Moody
and The Manhattan Transfer. He received two Grammy awards for Michael Brecker’s
Wide Angles for best instrumental arrangement and best large ensemble. In
addition, he has worked as a pianist and accordionist on hundreds of projects, starting
in l976 with Pat Martino, to projects with Jim Hall, Pat Metheny, Joe Lovano, Billy
Cobham, Al Jarreau and the Gil Evans Orchestra. |
Isaac Smith
Trombone • Member 2004-2005
A Los Angeles native, Isaac Smith studied with trombone masters like Slide Hampton and Curtis Fuller before taking long-term, high-profile sideman jobs with the likes of conguero Francisco Aguabella and the Gerald Wilson Orchestra. In addition to leading his own ensembles, he has performed with Benny Golson, rap star Snoop Dogg, the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, and the Mingus Big Band, among others.

Robert Hurst

A true Renaissance man of jazz, Mr. Hurst is one of the most in-demand bassists today (with credits including Grammy-winning albums by Wynton and Branford Marsalis), as well as a member of NBC's Tonight Show Band, a bandleader, educator, and film composer.

Brian Blade
Drums • Member 2004
The leader of the Brian Blade Fellowship and one of the hottest sideman in jazz, the Louisiana-born percussionist "possesses a liquid approach that enables him to meet each piece of music on its own terms, saturating it with rhythmic propulsion and percussive color" (Jazziz).

Josh Roseman

A trombonist and composer residing in Brooklyn, New York, Josh Roseman is the leader of the JRU, the Execution Quintet, the Constellations and various other ensembles.He has been called "a gorgeous-sounding trombone balladeer" (Chicago Sun-Times) and “one of the brightest young acts out there today, pushing the boundaries of music in a focused and thoughtful manner” (JazzReview).
