Collective Repertoire 2007 • Thelonious Monk
The SFJAZZ Collective’s innovative approach to repertoire honors jazz’s recent history while championing the music’s contemporary directions. In addition to original compositions written by Collective members exclusively for the group, each year the SFJAZZ Collective tackles the work of a modern jazz master. For 2007, the group presents the music of trailblazing pianist and composer Thelonious Monk. Artistic Director Joshua Redman is thrilled to work with Monk’s classic compositions. “Monk’s going to be a lot of fun for us, because Monk’s music is so fun, with such an infectious sense of humor,” Redman notes. “He’s also going to be a tremendous challenge, partly because his music has been done so well by so many musicians who’ve come after him. We’ll try to capture the essence of his music, but to do it in our own way.” New Collective trumpeter Dave Douglas is also a life-long fan of Monk’s tunes. "Monk's music is, I feel, the finishing school for a jazz musician,” he said. “To learn the inner workings of his pieces is to gain a lifetime of knowledge about harmony, melody, rhythm and good taste. And life." 2007 is also the first season Collective members have taken the arrangements of the modern masters on themselves. In its first three seasons, the group played Gil Goldstein’s arrangements of the music of saxophonist/composers Ornette Coleman (2004) and John Coltrane (2005), and pianist/composer Herbie Hancock (2006). |
