Director of Development
SUMMARY
As a member of SFJAZZ’s senior staff, the Director of Development is responsible for securing the organization’s contributed revenue, including institutional and individual fundraising for operating support, special projects, endowment and capital needs. The position includes the creation and implementation of fundraising plans; management and tracking of income and expense budgets, and the supervision of the day-to-day operations of a six-member department. The position also advances the strategic and long-range objectives of the organization and works closely with the Board of Trustees.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Creates detailed income and expense budgets, timelines and strategic plans for development functions for the annual fund, capital campaign, endowment, and planned giving.
- Oversees all fundraising efforts for the following categories: government agencies, foundations, corporate grants, corporate sponsorship, Board or Trustees, major individual donors, membership and special events.
- Selects, trains, supervises and develops department staff to maintain and improve quality of membership and development programs – including grants management (proposals, reporting and stewardship), corporate sponsorship, direct mail and telefunding campaigns, renewals, personal solicitations, cultivation and recognition events, benefit fulfillment, and ongoing donor research.
- Ensures the cultivation and stewardship of major donors, institutional funders and corporate sponsors and oversees the annual calendar of donor/member recognition and cultivation events, including donor trips.
- Provides oversight for maintenance of development records.
- Serves as primary staff liaison to the Development Committee and the Committee on Trustees.
- Creation and oversight of all fundraising materials, e.g. brochures, solicitations and acknowledgements, scripts, newsletters, invitations, program books, order forms, programs, web site copy, correspondence.
- Participation in departmental, staff and board committee meetings
- Coordination between development and all other SFJAZZ departments
- Represents SFJAZZ through participation in community organizations, philanthropic associations and attendance at conferences and meetings
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Five years of senior-level development experience and success, preferably in the performing arts. Knowledge of principles and practices of all aspects of fundraising, including special events, corporate sponsorship, and knowledge of philanthropic community. Experience with non-profit boards, committees, donors and volunteers. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with Board of Trustees, senior management, staff, volunteers, support organizations, patrons and the public. Experience in strategic and long-range planning.
Successful candidate will possess:
- Excellent administrative and management skills
- Fine written and verbal communication skills
- Superior interpersonal skills and ability to interact professionally with volunteers, colleagues, and donors, including ability to maintain donor confidentiality
- Strong work ethic, professional manner and appearance in representing SFJAZZ
- High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word and Excel, donor databases, and a working knowledge of search functions for donor research purposes
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize a workload in a timely manner to complete assignment when faced with many deadlines and competing requirements.
