Director of Marketing and Communications
SFJAZZ, one of the world’s leading non-profit jazz institutions, is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Marketing and Communications to develop and implement promotion and marketing of year-round jazz programs, including the San Francisco Jazz Festival, the SFJAZZ Spring Season, the SFJAZZ Collective resident and touring ensemble, jazz education programs for children and adults, and branded merchandise.
You will have six main priorities:
- Develop and implement marketing and sales plans for 65+ performances annually
- Optimize ticket sales, group, and niche marketing strategies for SFJAZZ events
- Manage public relations and media image of SFJAZZ and its programs
- Coordinate marketing/promotion of the SFJAZZ Collective with national and international concert tour presenters
- Identify and support merchandising and branding opportunities
- Supervise nine-person department, with five direct reports
To be successful, you must demonstrate:
- Exceptional project and deadline management abilities,
- Strong communication skills, and
- Comprehensive knowledge of all aspects of performing arts marketing, including regional and national print media and electronic media (radio, TV, Internet). You will be supported by and regularly communicate with a staff of full-time employees, outside consultants (as needed), other SFJAZZ staff, and the Marketing Committee of the SFJAZZ Board of Trustees.
Examples of your responsibilities include:
- Strategic Planning. Create effective and comprehensive short-term (one year) and long-term (three years) plans for marketing, public relations, and sales.
- Audience Development and Research. Build current audience (members and ticket buyers) and devise strategies to develop new audiences, including targeted markets.
- Media Sponsorship/Promotional Partners. Develop and manage media sponsor relationships.
- Collateral materials. Department is responsible for the design, content, production and distribution of marketing materials and the design and production of additional organizational materials (e.g., Membership brochures, Education newsletters)
- Online communications. Oversee and continuously develop organizational Web site; plan, generate, and transmit a variety of e-correspondence (e.g., SFJAZZ e-News, special-offer e-mails)
- Advertising/Media Planning. Create advertising plan and place media buys in print, radio, TV, outdoor, and Internet outlets.
- Box Office. Supervise box office so as to best sell tickets to SFJAZZ events and service our customers, and control costs associated with on-site and remote sales. Responsible for visual merchandising of SFJAZZ material in SFJAZZ Box Office/Store.
- Press and Community Relation/Advocacy. Supervise publicist, who manages public awareness of SFJAZZ regionally, nationally, and internationally
- Budgeting. Responsible for developing and monitoring annual departmental budget.
- In-kind Donations. Responsible for acquiring all services and goods donated toward marketing department efforts (for example, donated media coverage).
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum five years experience in a comparable position. Performing arts experience highly desirable. Must have proven management, leadership, creative thinking, communication, and negotiation skills. Knowledge of jazz is important.
