“Sangam”Charles Lloyd with Zakir Hussain and Eric HarlandFriday, November 3 • 8:00pm“The new trio [is] totally condensed and alive, making the most of Mr. Lloyd’s prized lyricism as well as of the two percussionists’ melodic skills.” —The New York Times With a warm, searching saxophone tone, Charles Lloyd invokes deep spiritual authority on the bandstand. No less an authority than Elvin Jones noted that Lloyd “has contributed as much as any other living person in the world to the development of the art form of the saxophone.” Lloyd is also renowned for leading great groups, which have included pianists Keith Jarrett and Michel Petrucciani and drummers Jack DeJohnette and Billy Higgins. His latest trio unites tabla titan Zakir Hussain with drummer (and SFJAZZ Collective member) Eric Harland. Lloyd and Hussain performed at the powerful Grace Cathedral concert in 2001, and the three are featured on Lloyd's latest album, Sangam. Read Program Notes
