Like the hot jazz pioneer and guitar master Django Reinhardt,
with whom he shares his gypsy ancestry, French guitarist Dorado
Schmitt seems to have swing in his blood. In 2001 he launched
the first American festival to celebrate Reinhardt’s music
at Birdland in New York. That same festival band, which features
his son Samson on second guitar and violin, has since sold
out venues across the country and hits the San Francisco Jazz
Festival to spread the “upbeat, joyous approach to jazz
that is at the core of the Reinhardt style.” (Los
