Program Notes
The “Swingin’ on the Bay Brunch Cruise” is
one of the San Francisco Jazz Festival’s signature events.
This year’s iteration is no exception, with two decks of
the Bay Area’s best swing and jump-blues music and brunch-time
views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and the San Francisco
skyline.
Though the swing and jump-blues revival hit its critical
mass in the mid’90s, Lavay Smith & Her Red Hot Skillet Lickers
had already been thrilling Bay Area music fans and Lindy Hoppers
since the late ‘80s. Known for impeccable musicianship
and infectious swing, the band has won numerous local awards
including a Bammie, a Wammie, and topped the San Francisco
Chronicle’s Readers Poll as “Best Band.” Of
Smith, the Boston Globe noted “the saucy vocalist
actually knows the difference between jump music and bland R&B
in corny suits.”
Another stalwart swing believer, keyboardist Steve Lucky formed
his first swing band, the Blue Front Persuaders, in his native
Michigan in the ‘80s. After relocating to San Francisco
following a stint in New York City, Lucky assembled the Rhumba
Bums to share his enduring faith in the power of swing. With
the addition of vocalist and “smooth and steady” (Guitar
Player) guitarist Carmen Getit in 1994, the group has continued
to jolt the bar upwards for swing fans worldwide.
