Marisa MonteSaturday, November 4 • 8pm | Sunday, November 5 • 7pm“A scintillating stage presence.” – The Times (UK) Program NotesAs she embarks on her first U.S. tour in six years, Marisa Monte leaves her native Brazil every bit the superstar. Both of the singer-songwriter’s latest albums, Infinito Particular and Universo Au Meu Redor, have already gone platinum at home since their release this spring, and her previous project, Tribalistas with Carlinhos Brown and Arnaldo Antunes, was a huge international success. With only six shows in four cities scheduled on the tour, these two nights in S.F. are exceedingly rare chances to see an international luminary in the most intimate of settings.
Though her father was a director of the Portela Samba school, Marisa’s early musical tastes veered to classical and opera. In fact, she turned down her first recording contract at the age of 16, opting to study voice in Italy. It was while overseas that she decided to make a career in the fertile field of Brazilian music. “I felt that I had much more to do here to sing Brazilian music, to talk about Brazilian reality and Brazilian culture. Singing opera, which I think is beautiful and wonderful...but I think it’s something from another time, another era.” Her recordings have seen her work with some of the titans of Brazilian music, including Elis Regina, Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso.
Monte’s two new albums present two very different sides of her multi-faceted talent. Steeped in samba tradition by her father, Monte undertook Universo as something of an archeology project, recording important songs dating back to the ‘40s—that were in danger of being lost—alongside her own take on the Brazilian form. In a different feat of musical rebirth, Infinito Particular features Monte’s own sketches for pop songs from throughout her career that she discovered on various cassette tapes. She’ll draw from both releases for these very special performances.
