    Program Notes

There is very little Mimi Fox cannot do with a guitar. Capable of stunning electric runs, she is also a versatile hand at accompaniment with a mellifluous arsenal of chord voicings. And she is just as well versed at exploiting the warm resonance of the acoustic guitar in solo settings.

JazzTimes called Fox’s latest album, Perpetually Hip,  “close to a definitive Fox statement.” The double-CD release features the former Joe Pass protégée playing with her trio on one disc, and another disc of her stunning solo work. Such resourcefulness has made Fox an in-demand player. She’s contributed to Patty Larkin’s La Guitara, was featured on Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz radio show, and is the director of guitar studies at Berkeley’s heralded JazzSchool. Perhaps the most potent sign of her rising stardom is the ultimate compliment to a string-head: a guitar model with her name on it, designed by Heritage Guitars.

Fox’s recent performance at the Kennedy Center’s 11th Annual Women in Jazz Festival drew this accolade from All About Jazz: “Fox’s firm control, clarity of concept, and emotional depth made this the most memorable moment of the festival and proved why Fox is one of the most recognized guitarists on the scene.”
