  • "The sight of 17 women swinging is a powerful thing."
    — San Francisco Chronicle

As male musicians headed overseas during World War II, women had a chance to assert their musical presence in the big band era. History lessons aside, it’s too bad the idea wasn't revisited sooner, as the seemingly telepathic Montclair Women's Big Band is now proving from its home base in Oakland. Formed in 1998 by trumpeter Ellen Seeling and producer Barbara Price, the “groundbreaking” (Oakland Tribune) ensemble is stocked with exquisite soloists and enough swing to return the Great American Music Hall to its dance hall glory days.
