  • Catch the instrumental wizardry of two “#1 Rising Stars” from the 2006 DownBeat Critics Poll in this remarkable double bill.

Vibraphonist Stefon Harris has played with leaders as stylistically diverse as Wynton Marsalis and Charlie Hunter, but this exciting young artist has also marked his own creative turf as a bandleader and, more recently, long form composer. His latest album, African Tarantella: Dances with Duke pays tribute to the legendary composer’s music “serving as further proof that Duke Ellington's music, in addition to being enormous in quantity, can be interpreted in an infinite number of colorful ways”(Billboard). All About Jazz asserts that his band Blackout "is evolving into one of the finest working units on the scene today. It’s capable of a near-perfect combination of spontaneity, complex composition, visceral energy and sheer soulfulness that few other bands can achieve in a similar space.”

Leading his own quartet on the other half of the bill is the SFJAZZ Collective’s founding alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón. The native of San Juan, Puerto Rico graduated from the Berklee School of Music and has gigged with the likes of David Sánchez and the Either/Orchestra. “A strong force in both contemporary jazz and Latin music” (New York Newsday), Zenón manages to blur the lines between the two without sacrificing the power of either. His latest album, Jíbaro, draws heavily on the traditions of his native Puerto Rican music and his prowess as an improviser. Read Program Notes
