Jamal, SFJAZZ Forge New ‘Links’

On October 21, jazz piano master Ahmad Jamal will give not one but two concerts at Herbst Theatre: an evening Festival performance, and a special afternoon fundraiser benefiting the philanthropic programs of the San Francisco Chapter of The Links, Incorporated. The event, titled “SFLINKS@SFJAZZ," is a unique collaboration between two Bay Area nonprofit organizations, and one that SFJAZZ Executive Director Randall Kline sees as a model of community involvement. “Being able to use our strong connections in the music industry to work with a prominent local organization such as The Links, Inc. is a distinct pleasure,” Kline said.

The Links, Incorporated is a national and international nonprofit organization, composed of more than 12,000 concerned, committed, and dedicated women of African descent. The San Francisco Chapter was founded in 1950 and works to provide hands-on service and support to local community-based initiatives and organizations.

“Jazz music has the potential not only to uplift the African American community, but also to build bridges with other communities,” said Allison N. Metz, MD, President of The Links’ San Francisco Chapter. “We want people to appreciate and recognize these jazz giants as ‘living treasures’ in our midst. We also wish to acknowledge the hard work that SFJAZZ has done over many years to keep this art form alive in the Bay Area.”
