The next generation of jazz is upon us! The Bay
Area’s most talented young musicians will showcase
their dynamic improvising, original compositions,
and arrangements of classic jazz songs in one of S.F.’s most renowned music
venues. Selected by competitive audition each year,
the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars represent the
highest calibre of young musicians from across the
Bay Area. Since the program’s inception in 2001,
five All-Star students have been selected for the
grammy All-American Jazz Ensembles, four have
received ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Awards, and
the ensemble has collectively received 30 DownBeat
Student Music Awards.
Now in its 8th year, the 2008-09 SFJAZZ High School All-Stars make their Fall Festival debut after highly competitive auditions with the most advanced high school players in the Bay Area. Led by Director Dee Spencer, this season’s 18-piece big band will feature the best of the classic swing standards of the 1930’s and 1940’s including the great traditions of Count Basie and Duke Ellington. In addition, major contemporary works from composers Thad Jones/Mel Lewis and Maria Schneider will be showcased. Expect to hear the exciting sounds of future rising Bay Area jazz stars as they shine collectively in these toplevel arrangements.
