Henry Butler may be seated alone at a piano, but his fingers contain multitudes. The blind pianist first gained national attention in 1986 when the revived Impulse! label released his stunning Fivin’ Around featuring certified jazz giants Freddie Hubbard, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins. Yet, the stylistically omnivorous musician was raised on an extraordinary diet of not just jazz, but grooves. With each subsequent release, Butler has further revealed his capabilities, from the mastery of McCoy Tyner-influenced post-bop to his rollicking command of Crescent City rhythm and blues. Also a highly effective vocalist who can sing rock, gospel and blues with authority, the New Orleans native is heir to the extroverted keyboard tradition that runs from Jelly Roll Morton through Professor Longhair, James Booker and Allen Toussaint. And amazingly, Butler is an acclaimed photographer whose work has been displayed in exhibitions and galleries around the country.
