Melody Gardot didn’t plan on becoming a musician, let alone one of the world’s most captivating singer songwriters. She started playing piano bars at age 16 to earn income, but painting was the primary creative outlet though her teens. The victim of a devastating car accident at 19, she spent months in recovery, and music became a source of solace and therapeutic treatment. In the process, she wrote more than a dozen songs marked by rippling melodies, rich harmonies and emotionally trenchant lyrics. Accompanying herself on guitar and piano, she unfurls each line at a languorous pace, her supple voice revealing a world-weary sensibility that seems out of step with her 24 years. Her carefully tended melodies are shorn of all superfluous notes, even when surrounded by lush orchestral arrangements. The new Verve album My One and Only Thrill, produced by Larry Klein (Joni Mitchell, Herbie Hancock) confirms her status as a prodigiously gifted artist with a future on a grand scale. “Smoldering becomes Ms. Gardot, whose voice carries a soft allure even on brighter fare.” the new york times “You owe it to your ears to discover this gem for yourself.” BBC |
