Only 18 when Wynton Marsalis first hired him for a tour in the mid-1980s, Eric Reed has developed into one of the most persuasively swinging pianists in jazz, an effervescent improviser who combines superior technique with endless soul. Raised in Philadelphia, he grew up performing in his father’s Baptist church. By high school, Reed was gaining renown in Los Angeles for his work with the legendary Gerald Wilson Orchestra. After a long tenure with Marsalis and stints with Freddie Hubbard and Joe Henderson, Reed has emerged as a consummate bandleader and arranger with more than 15 albums to his credit. In his first solo performance in the Bay Area, Reed delves into the ingenious and infinitely challenging music of Thelonious Monk while celebrating the master’s 92nd birthday. "Sharp sophistication is a hallmark of Eric Reed’s piano playing, whatever the parameters.” the new york times |
