McCoy Tyner
A celebration of McCoy Tyner runs through the Spring Season, but there’s no substitute for a first-hand encounter with the 70-year old legend. His tidal piano style and masterly compositions have influenced just about every jazz musician since the early 1960s, when his huge, ringing chords anchored John Coltrane’s volcanic quartet. He’s maintained the same daunting level of creativity as a bandleader, recording dozens of awe-inspiring albums, particularly for Milestone. His latest release, Guitars (Half Note), features John Scofield, Bill Frisell, Marc Ribot and Derek Trucks. For this special, singular SFJAZZ performance, he’s joined by vibraphone master Bobby Hutcherson.
"One of the living mainlines of jazz [and] the designer of modern jazz harmony"
