Fela Kuti might be long gone, but the Afrobeat
revolution he fomented in the 1970s is going
stronger than ever. In the Bay Area, the SF Music
Award-winning band Albino! mans the Afrobeat
barricades, offering sweaty inspiration with its
relentless grooves. The 10-piece ensemble has won
a passionate following with its combustible stage
shows thick with driving percussion, heavy-duty
horns, African dance and tripped-out tribal garb.
A favorite on the festival circuit and at Burning
Man, Albino! honors the crusading spirit central
to Fela’s legacy. The dance party kicks off with Liberian native DJ Jeremiah and the Afrobeat nation.
"Albino!’s propulsive grooves, jazzy horn
arrangements, and socially relevant commentary turn
the dance floor into a forum of politifunkification."
