CeU
Brazil is a continent-sized nation blessed with abundant natural resources, including a seemingly endless supply of ravishing female singers such as Astrud Gilberto, Eliane Elias and Bebel Gilberto. The latest to find an American audience is Céu, a 29-year-old vocalist from São Paulo with a soft, insinuating voice and a taste for reggae, jazz, samba and R&B filtered through gauzy electronica textures.
Céu’s self-titled 2007 debut on San Francisco’s own Six Degrees Records quickly shot to the top of Billboard’s World Music chart and earned two Grammy® award nominations. Her stunning new album, Vagarosa, underscores this dazzling young artist's ever-deepening musical sophistication and intelligence. Céu means either “sky” or “heaven,” which seems particularly appropriate, as there’s something wondrously ethereal about her presence—especially apparent in concert. Her last San Francisco show sold out, so don’t miss this one!
Opening the night is Patrizia Laquidara, a Sicilian-born vocalist whose first album, Para Voce Querido Cae, was a tribute to acclaimed Brazilian maestro Caetano Veloso. She has since gone on to explore the diverse sounds of the Southern Hemisphere, winning first prize at Italy’s prestigious Sanremo music festival for Best Song and Best Performance.
