Hiromi
While still a student at Berklee College of Music, Japanese keyboardist Hiromi Uehara so impressed piano legend Ahmad Jamal that he introduced her to his label Telarc, and co-produced her 2003 debut Another Mind, which went gold in Japan. Since then she’s forged a dynamic electro-acoustic sound with Sonicbloom, her power trio featuring virtuosic bassist Tony Grey and drummer Martin Valihora. Joined by wildly inventive guitarist David “Fuze” Fiuczynski (Screaming Headless Torsos), she released 2008’s Beyond Standard, the first album not devoted to her own compositions. She has continued to catch the ears of piano masters—her latest release, Duet, is a collaboration with Chick Corea that “heralds the true arrival of a gifted young artist” (JazzTimes). Required listening for those who appreciate technical wizardry, on any instrument.
