Brad Mehldau
In our Weekend focus series we present the genius of Brad Mehldau in a rare solo appearance—plus the premiere of a unique new piano/percussion duo. Showcased back-to back, only at SFJAZZ.

Brad Mehldau, 38, is the definitive pianist of his generation, a dauntingly thoughtful artist who has created a huge, disparate body of ravishing music. He first gained fame in the early 1990s as a founding member of the Joshua Redman Quartet. Within a few years he launched his extraordinary trio with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Jorge Rossy (and later Jeff Ballard), recording a lavishly praised Art of the Trio series. Drawing inspiration from his love of literature, philosophy and European classical music, Mehldau’s music is marked by his gift for melodic invention, whether reinterpreting standards, transforming contemporary pop songs into effective vehicles for improvisation or spinning tales with his original tunes.

Judging from his quietly riveting 2004 solo album Live in Tokyo (Nonesuch), Mehldau is at his most unfettered as an improviser when he’s alone on stage. In an exclusive SFJAZZ Members-only concert, the pianist plays an intimate solo recital, a rare opportunity to catch this master in action—up close and personal.

"Universally admired as one of the most adventurous pianists to arrive on the jazz scene in years."
