A creative force on the Bay Area jazz scene for more than a decade, trombonist and bassist Adam Theis is a visionary bandleader who has launched a series of stylistically expansive large ensembles. With his Jazz Mafia Horns, the Santa Rosa native has backed an astounding array of artists, from Zion-I and Bing Ji Ling to Will Bernard’s Motherbug and Thomas Dolby. He tackles his most ambitious project yet with an hour-long, SFJAZZ-commissioned suite that merges modern jazz and symphonic instrumentation with hip-hop and electronic music, featuring a 60-piece ensemble drawn from Theis’s Realistic Orchestra, Shotgun Wedding Hip-Hop Symphony, and special guest artists including Bay Area rap phenomenon Lyrics Born.
