African Spiritual Practices and Retentions in Latin Music (6-class series)
August 4-September 8 Museum of the African Diaspora Jazz history, live performance, classic audio and exciting video make Discover Jazz the most distinctive jazz appreciation course available for adults. SFJAZZ, the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival and The Museum of the African Diaspora present a unique and exclusive series from Bay Area lecturer, bandleader, percussionist and educator, John Santos. Discover Jazz classes can be enjoyed as a series, or on an individual basis. Musical practices throughout Latin America have preserved a wealth of African spiritual content. This six-part series will reveal several elements of African origin that form the basis of popular Latin music and Latin jazz, including instrumentation, rhythm, melody and more. During the series, participants will listen to and analyze a broad cross-section of recorded examples from Cuba, Puerto Rico, Republica Dominicana/Haiti, the United States and Brazil that span the last century.
Each Discover Jazz class includes classic audio tracks and entertaining lectures. Open to any and all jazz enthusiasts, regardless of prior knowledge. |
