Christian Scott; Sean Jones Quartet

Christian Scott; Sean Jones Quartet

This night is a summit meeting of two of the brightest lights in jazz trumpet, as celebrated New Orleans trumpeter Christian Scott and his stellar band share a bill with the group headed by former Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra horn star and established bandleader Sean Jones. Mentored as a youngster by uncle and New Orleans saxophone luminary Donald Harrison, Christian Scott was awarded a full scholarship to Boston’s prestigious Berklee College of Music and performed as part of the Berklee Monterey Quartet before rocketing to international recognition with his GRAMMY-nominated debut, Rewind That, at the age of 22. He’s gone on to record seven albums for Concord, including his masterful meditation on his home city post-Katrina, Yesterday You Said Tomorrow, and his latest, Christian aTunde Adjuah. Scott collaborated with former SFJAZZ Collective vibraphonist Stefon Harris and current Collective tenor saxophonist David Sánchez on the acclaimed 2011 jazz-in-Cuba project, Ninety Miles.

A masterly improviser with a feeling for the post-bop 1960s music of Miles Davis and Freddie Hubbard, Sean Jones toured last year in a Davis tribute band with four acclaimed Miles associates -- Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Marcus Miller. Jones, who has released six well-received albums, leads crackling quartet features pianist Orrin Evans, bassist Luques Curtis, and drummer Obed Calvaire, a member of the stellar SFJAZZ Collective.
