Charles Lloyd New Quartet

Tenor saxophone titan Charles Lloyd’s working quartet is one of the greatest small groups in jazz, a truly all-star ensemble including MacArthur Genius Grant recipient Jason Moran on piano, bassist Reuben Rogers and 2014 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Eric Harland. Lloyd attained rock star status in the mid-60s with one of the all-time great quartets, featuring Keith Jarrett, Cecil McBee and Jack DeJohnette. Since the release of that group’s Dream Weaver and Forest Flower, Lloyd has charted a remarkable trajectory as one of the most restlessly inventive musicians in jazz history. Over the past 20 years his extraordinary albums have featured collaborations with Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Zakir Hussain, Billy Higgins and many other luminaries, but Lloyd’s current quartet has been his primary focus since 2007, performing around the world and recording a trio of superb albums for the ECM label. In the words of The New York Times’ Ben Ratliff: “Follow the career of Charles Lloyd, and you see a map of great jazz across half a century. His shows, full of momentum and intuition, perfectly represent the idea that the best jazz needs to be experienced live.”

"Mr. Lloyd is famous for having good bands… but his New Quartet is a different order of good… All in their mid-30s, they have their own language, articulate and intimate, itchy and soulful and often thrilling... " — The New York Times
"Lloyd once again has a group able to follow his excursions into the music and into the mystic. " — Jazzwise
