Terence Blanchard w/ Kenny Barron & Ambrose Akinmusire

An exclusive, multi-generational evening of teachers, students and jazz legacy that pairs Terrence Blanchard with his mentor, NEA Jazz Master pianist Kenny Barron and one of Blanchard’s own protégés, trumpet star Ambrose Akinmusire. Barron helped define and extend the jazz tradition since his work with Dizzy Gillespie in the early ‘60s catapulted him into the spotlight. A nine-time GRAMMY nominee, his career has included extended associations with Stan Getz, Yusef Lateef and Freddie Hubbard in addition to his sparkling work as a leader. As a student at Rutgers University in the 1980s, Blanchard fell under the tutelage of Barron during the pianist’s 27-year tenure at the school, and they established a strong bond that lasts to this day. The pair has performed together sporadically over the years, and appeared together on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s 1987 film School Daze. Easily one of the most celebrated young trumpeters in jazz, Akinmusire was a student of Blanchard at the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz and won the Institute’s International Trumpet Competition in 2007. He has recorded a trio of celebrated albums including 2012’s When The Heart Emerges Glistening, which was named to a number of best-of-year lists in the jazz press. His newest session, The Imagined Savior Is Far Easier to Paint, features his longstanding quintet augmented by strings.
