Turtle Island Quartet & Ravi Coltrane Quartet

Boldly going where no string quartet had gone before, the Bay Area’s Turtle Island Quartet left many listeners stunned with their Grammy Award-winning 2007 album A Love Supreme: The Legacy of John Coltrane. Blessed by Alice Coltrane, who contributed liner notes, the project centers on a deeply moving arrangement of the title suite, but also includes a ravishing version of “Naima,” a scorching “Moment’s Notice,” an entrancing “My Favorite Things” and other material associated with or inspired by Coltrane. Balanced between founding members David Balakrishnan and Mark Summer, and two newcomers, Polish-born Mateusz Smoczynki and German-born Benjamin von Gutzeit, Turtle Island has thrived over three decades by attracting a steady stream of brilliant string talent, while collaborated with masters such as Paquito D'Rivera, Kenny Barron, and Tierney Sutton. As part of this weeklong celebration marking the 50th anniversary of the recording of A Love Supreme, Turtle Island will share the bill with a new quartet led by Ravi Coltrane, who is exploring his father’s masterwork in a disparate array of settings.
