Tiffany Austin performs Nina Simone's 'High Priestess of Soul'
This month’s Hotplate features the fiery Bay Area vocalist Tiffany Austin performing music from High Priestess of Soul, the classic 1967 album by the immortal singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone. As Simone did during her heyday in the 1960s, Austin takes a refreshing approach to the jazz tradition by blending elements of R&B and the blues in equal measure, creating an invigorating hybrid that stirs the soul and moves the body. Austin has shared the stage with artists including Roy Ayers, John Handy, Marcus Shelby, Adam Theis, and Howard Wiley, and her new recording project celebrating the music of Hoagy Charmichael will be released in June of 2015. Join us for the return of this Bay Area singing treasure.
