Esperanza Spalding & Fred Hersch Duo

For this world premiere performance, bassist, vocalist, composer and SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director Esperanza Spalding performs in duet with renowned pianist Fred Hersch. Called “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, Hersch is a six-time GRAMMY nominee and one of the most influential jazz pianists working, mentoring Brad Mehldau and The Bad Plus’ Ethan Iverson, among others. He has recorded over 40 albums as a leader and has collaborated with artists including Art Farmer, Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, Stan Getz, Lee Konitz and Bill Frisell. He is currently on the faculty of New England Conservatory and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship for composition.
