2014-15 SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors

For our 2014-15 Season, we introduce a new set of SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Directors. Four of the most forward-thinking musicians in jazz will each curate exclusive programming. These shows will premiere new works, feature unprecedented collaborations between world-renowned artists, and jumpstart the boundary-breaking creative mission of the SFJAZZ Center.

Zakir Hussain

The scion of a legendary Hindustani percussion dynasty, Zakir Hussain is universally acknowledged as the world’s greatest tabla virtuoso, a master of classical North Indian music who has collaborated with a glittering roster of international stars including Charles Lloyd, Mickey Hart and the legendary group Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin and violinist L. Shankar.

Eric Harland

Multi-Grammy Nominated Drummer Eric Harland is the most in demand drummer of his generation. It's been his privilege to perform with jazz legends like Betty Carter, Joe Henderson and McCoy Tyner, and has played on more than 200 recordings with such artists as Terence Blanchard, Greg Osby, Charles Lloyd and Zakir Hussain. In DownBeat’s 65th Annual Readers Poll, he was included in the short list of top drummers, in the company of masters like Roy Haynes and the late Elvin Jones.

Trumpeter Terence Blanchard is jazz's foremost Renaissance man. A savvy bandleader, celebrated film composer, brilliant jazz writer and influential educator, the GRAMMY-winning New Orleans native is a creative force who sits at the apex of the contemporary jazz scene.

Esperanza Spalding

Bassist, vocalist and composer Esperanza Spalding is the most alluring ambassador in jazz, a spellbinding talent who has brought her sleek and soulful sound to a vast international audience. Through network television appearances and command performances at the White House, she has captured a new generation’s imagination while maintaining the highest standards as an improviser.
