Asha Bhosle

Since making her soundtrack debut in 1948, Asha Bhosle’s stunning voice has been heard on more than 13,000 songs and featured in over 1,000 films — in at least 15 different languages — a mind-boggling feat that makes her the most widely recorded vocalist in history. While never appearing on screen she nonetheless became a huge star, often collaborating with her husband, celebrated composer R.D. Burman. Her partnership with fellow Indian music legend and Bay Area sarod master Ali Akbar Khan resulted in a Grammy nomination for their landmark recording, Legacy. Beyond her monumental contributions to film and Indian culture, Bhosle’s influence has extended deeply into pop music with superstar musicians such as Sarah Brightman, '80s new wave icon Boy George, R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe and even the Black Eyed Peas, sampling her unforgettable voice. She has also worked with the extraordinary Kronos Quartet, with whom she gained another Grammy nomination for You’ve Stolen My Heart. Now 78, Asha Bhosle sounds like a woman half her age, throwing herself headlong into new musical settings including the entrancing new classical project, Naina Lagai Ke. Don’t miss this very special event!
