Chris Potter

Chris Potter’s Underground Orchestra

Saxophonist Chris Potter, called "one of the most studied (and copied) saxophonists on the planet" by DownBeat and "one of the best musicians around" by saxophone giant Dave Liebman, leads an expanded version of his supercharged Underground band, augmented by a string quartet. A restless explorer, Potter began his musical journey in the late 1980s with bebop veteran Red Rodney and laid the foundation for his current position as a leading light in jazz, sharing the studio and bandstand with a staggering list of major artists including Paul Motian, Dave Holland, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Steely Dan and the Mingus Big Band, to name a few. From his star-studded debut forward, Potter has shown a singular focus and growth as a composer and improvisor, moving deftly from acoustic post-bop to the fringes of experimentalism and forming the funk-fueled Underground in 1995 with guitarist Wayne Krantz, keyboardist Craig Taborn and drummer Nate Smith. Since the release of the band’s 2009 crowd-funded CD Ultrahang (with guitarist Adam Rogers in place of Krantz), Potter has signed to Manfred Eicher’s ECM Records and toured the world with guitar god Pat Metheny’s Unity Band project. He returns now to the Underground, giving the music an exciting new dimension.
