The Composer/Arranger
The Composer/Arranger
While jazz is an improviser’s art form, the soloists all looked to the composer for inspiration. Often borrowing from unexpected sources such as Broadway show tunes or Tin-Pan Alley hits, artists like Duke Ellington, Fatts Waller, and Thelonious Monk showed that jazz musicians were gifted and creative composers, surprising even the most critical ears with their sophistication and artistry.
In class three, we'll discuss and get to know some of the most famous jazz compositions, learning how the pen influenced the growth and development of jazz as much as the best improvised solos.
