Mujeres: Female Icons in Latin Music
Latino culture is historically male-centered, and Latin music – in particular Afro-Caribbean music – has continued to perpetuate the theme of machismo in many popular styles including salsa, merengue, bachata and beyond. But alongside this paradigm there have been numerous pioneering female musicians, songwriters and instrumentalists who have broken through and achieved a tremendous level of recognition and advocacy while creating some of the richest popular repertoire over the years. Pianist, composer and SFJAZZ Director of Education Rebeca Mauleón shares the treasure trove of powerful feminine voices in popular Latin music in this multi-media presentation and live performance with special guests Jackeline Rago and the V-Note Ensemble.
