Bob James & David Sanborn

The spirits of Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond reunite two modern jazz titans. From his early years touring with Sarah Vaughan to founding the smooth jazz supergroup Fourplay, Bob James has explored a vast stretch of musical territory. A leading force in 1970s crossover jazz, the keyboardist played an essential role on a series of hit records by Stanley Turrentine, Maynard Ferguson, and most importantly Grover Washington, Jr. He scored his first Grammy Award with guitarist Earl Klugh on their 1980 album One on One, and earned another Grammy for his hit collaboration with altoist David Sanborn on 1986’s Double Vision. Sanborn has been one of the most visible and influential saxophonists in jazz for over four decades. A six-time Grammy winner, his 30 albums as a leader encompass R&B, blues, ballads, post-bop and the avant-garde. As a studio veteran, he has lent his passionate, unmistakable tone to recordings by Eric Clapton, James Brown and dozens more. Recorded the month of Brubeck’s death, the scorching new album Quartette Humaine reunites James with Sanborn in tribute to Brubeck’s immortal collaboration with saxophone legend Desmond and features a hard-hitting quartet including legendary drummer Steve Gadd and bassist James Genus. Marked by volatile interplay, this quartet’s music is anything but smooth.
