A double bill pairing two of the most exciting young bands in jazz, this program could be called The Future Is Now. Pianist Gerald Clayton, 28, hails from jazz royalty as the son of esteemed Los Angeles bassist/arranger John Clayton and nephew of alto saxophonist Jeff Clayton, and he got his start on the LA scene performing with the Clayton Brothers quintet. After moving to New York City in 2007 he toured widely with Ambrose Akinmusire, Gretchen Parlato, and Roy Hargrove, but it’s with his astounding Grammy-nominated trio featuring bassist Joe Sanders and Berkeley-raised drummer Justin Brown that he’s fully come into his own. With a compositional approach inspired by studies with Billy Childs, Clayton has honed a highly interactive sound woven from a vast array of sonic threads.

Houston-raised drummer Kendrick Scott, 32, is an equally prodigious player who can often be found on the road with Terrence Blanchard, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kurt Elling, Gretchen Parlato and Joshua Redman. He’s released several praised albums with his Oracle ensemble exploring his own spiritually charged compositions, and his latest, My Conviction, features reed expert John Ellis, guitarist Mike Moreno, Bay Area-raised piano maestro Taylor Eigsti, and Joe Sanders (doing double bass duty with both bands). NPR Music called the new recording “One of the top jazz albums to look out for in 2013.” If you are curious what the state of the art of modern jazz looks like, this is it!
