A Look Back at the 2006 SFJAZZ Gala...
"21st Century Jam" • March
10, 2006

On the brisk and rainy evening of March 10, the SFJAZZ Collective
and the SFJAZZ All-Star High School Ensemble captivated crowd a
sold-out crowd at the new St. Regis Hotel. A benefit evening to
support the artistic and education programs of SFJAZZ, this year’s
gala was a swinging success, raising more than $250,000. Northern
Trust Bank was the lead corporate sponsor; SFJAZZ Trustee Robert
Mailer Anderson and his wife, Nicola Miner,
served as Honorary Chairs for the 21st Century Jam; and Dr.
Verna Gibbs headed the Gala Committee of dedicated event
volunteers.
A
nightclub atmosphere set the perfect backdrop as guests enjoyed
caviar and signature cocktails while bidding on a host of tempting
silent auction packages including fine wine, signed first-editions,
original artwork, fabulous fashion, shopping sprees, spa treatments,
and more. Images of jazz musicians projected on the walls, and washes
of pink and blue light, set the tone for a night of great improvisation.
The
All-Star High School Quintet got the 350 gala-goers
in the groove by performing several works by Herbie Hancock. Guests
then feasted on delectable and organic offerings, paired with superb
wines. Following the sumptuous dinner, the SFJAZZ Collective
took the stage by storm in a world premiere performance
of their new works — a prelude to their critically-acclaimed
19-city international tour.
The
evening ended on a perfect jazz note, as guests sampled exquisite
sweets and libations, while an impromptu jam broke out with harmonica
man Charlie Musselwhite and jazz diva, Mary
Stallings. For good measure, Joshua Redman
and members of the SFJAZZ Collective traded licks
with the high school musicians for an after-hours party that left
guests shouting for more.
Proceeds from the Annual Gala support SFJAZZ artistic and education
programs.
We look forward to celebrating with you next year.
