Day 1 – Saturday, July 12, 2008
We will meet at the airport in Bilbao, and take a coach to the five-star Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao, adjacent to the Museo Guggenheim. Spend your afternoon enjoying the city at your leisure. Tonight we will dine together in the old quarter, enjoying pintxos at Victor Montes restaurant.
Day 2 – Sunday, July 13, 2008
After breakfast in the hotel, we will enjoy a guided tour of Bilbão seeing the sights of both the new and old in this beautiful city, including a guided tour of the iconic Guggenheim Museum designed by architect Frank Gehry. Following lunch we will take the short ride to the city of Vitoria, Spain – the capital of the Basque region, and check into our accommodations at the NH Hotel Canciller Ayala, our home base for the duration of the trip.
Day 3 – Monday, July 14, 2008
We wake early for the bus ride to the city of Pamplona for the final day of the Festival of San Fermín, where we’ll learn about the festival’s history and watch the famous running of the bulls from private balconies above the route. Following the run we will enjoy a group breakfast, tour of the city, take in some of the rituals and traditions, and complete the day with lunch. Those who wish to stay for a bull fight may do so.
Day 4 – Tuesday, July 15, 2008
Today we will start the morning with a walking guided tour of Vitoria. Lunch and the afternoon are yours to spend as you wish. Your season pass to the Vitoria Jazz Festival allows you to take in concerts throughout the day. Tonight we will enjoy our first concert together as a group, and those so inclined can enjoy late night jazz conveniently located at our hotel.
Day 5 – Wednesday, July 16, 2008
Today is a free day to spend as you wish. We highly recommend renting a car for a drive to San Sebastian and the coast along the Bay of Biscay. It is one of the lovelier areas to explore. Tonight we’ll enjoy more great jazz together.
Day 6 – Thursday, July 17, 2008
We depart this morning for a bus ride to the Rioja wine region where we will visit two distinguished wineries, Marques de Riscal and Ysios (pictured at left), for tasting and touring. We will enjoy a meal in the charming village of La Guardia, returning to Vitoria after lunch. Another evening of jazz awaits us.
Day 7 – Friday, July 18, 2008
Today is a free day for your own explorations. It’s interesting to note that the city of Vitoria offers free bicycles to anyone on a first come, first serve basis. The parks surrounding the city are well known for their beautiful greenery. We recommend visiting them by foot or bicycle as a lovely way to spend the day. We’ll enjoy another concert together in the evening.
Day 8 – Saturday, July 19, 2008
Today your morning is your own for any final sight seeing or shopping you might want to do. We will celebrate the conclusion of the trip with a farewell meal at the renowned El Portalon restaurant before sharing our last concert together.
Day 9 – Sunday, July 20, 2008
After breakfast, our private coach will take us to the Bilbao airport – the departure point for the journey through Spain or wherever your travel plans take you.
