“My father said, ‘You cannot ever
be a great genius musician, you can only be a great genius student.’”
–
Zakir Hussain
Hosted by Indian tabla legend Zakir Hussain and
SFJAZZ Executive Director Randall Kline at the Masonic Center Exhibition
Hall, the evening overflowed with entertaining anecdotes and insights
into the fabled career of this world music pioneer. Mr. Hussain’s
charismatic story-telling left the crowd with lasting images ranging
from a young Zakir walking down the streets of Mumbai blaring The
Doors “Light
My Fire” from
his boombox, to locking Sly Stone out of the recording studio in
order to finish the first released collaboration between Hussain
and Mickey Hart.
SFJAZZ Members in attendance were also treated
to numerous rare recordings, including one of the first “fusion” records
ever cut: drummer Buddy Rich jamming with Zakir’s father,
tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha.
