SFJAZZ Gala 2014 Honoring Herbie Hancock

The SFJAZZ Gala 2014 will honor the artistic genius of Herbie Hancock with the SFJAZZ Lifetime Achievement Award. Hancock’s music will be center stage for the gala’s main concert with performances by the music icon himself, the critically acclaimed SFJAZZ Collective, our award-winning SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, and surprise musical guests. The party will continue with dancing as “The Screaming Eagle of Soul” Charles Bradley & His Extraordinaires headlines our AfterJam concert. Craft cocktails and passed cuisine from award-winning chef Charles Phan will be served throughout the evening.

Attendees of our annual SFJAZZ Gala have included Bill Cosby, Dave Chappelle, Robert Redford, Chris Tucker, Tom Waits, Les Claypool, Charlie Musselwhite, Terrence Howard, Clint Eastwood, Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, California Attorney General Kamala D. Harris, The Honorable Willie Brown, Danny Glover, Shailene Woodley, Delroy Lindo, Lou Gossett Jr., Khandi Alexander, Peter Coyote, Amy Tan, Michael Chabon, Ronnie Lott, Vida Blue, Jed York, and other leaders in the worlds of business, politics, art and jazz.

Herbie Hancock is one of the great innovators and icons of modern music. A 14-time Grammy Winner, UNESCO Good Will Ambassador and a recipient of the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors, Hancock has blazed a trail for contemporary culture at every turn in his career. From his tenure with Miles Davis to creating standards like “Canteloupe Island,” innovative albums like Head Hunters and the chart-topping “Rockit” – the first Billboard hit to use turntable scratching – Hancock is a true musical legend.

All proceeds from the SFJAZZ Gala 2014 support SFJAZZ’s artistic and education programs.
