Ceramic Dog

Ceramic Dog is the experimental electro-rock trio that guitarist and leader Marc Ribot stresses isn’t a project; it’s a band in the truest sense, and was formed following a revelation that over his wildly diverse career, he’d never had a real “rock band.” The group’s name, translated from the French expression “chien de faïence,” means “frozen with emotion” – like bristling dogs the moment before they fight, or lovers immobilized in one another’s gaze. The moniker is perfectly apt for this explosive, unpredictable trio, which pairs Ribot’s slashing guitar work and vocals with the remarkable rhythm team of bassist Shahzad Ismaily (Lou Reed, Yoko Ono) and Bay Area grown drummer Ches Smith (Mr. Bungle, Mary Halvorson). “Humor, melody, and weirdness rule…” is how the Boston Phoenix described the band’s 2008 debut, Party Intellectuals, documenting the band’s exhilarating blend of raucous energy and dynamic experimentalism. The record included a scintillating version of The Doors’ hit “Break On Through,” and led to a series of power-packed performances around the world. The band’s 2013 follow up, Your Turn, is a streamlined refinement of Ceramic Dog’s approach, combining wicked humor and solid songwriting, and even includes a cover of jazz legend Dave Brubeck’s classic “Take Five.”
