Wesla Whitfield

The beloved Bay Area cabaret singer Wesla Whitfield makes her SFJAZZ Center debut in the Joe Henderson Lab with this entrancing show that, as The New York Times says, “combines ruthless insight, intense emotion and highly evolved jazz phrasing into a musical evening that goes beyond mere entertainment to flirt with profundity.” A native of Santa Maria, Whitfield was drawn to music at an early age, claiming “I knew at age two-and-a-half that I would grow up to be a singer.” Classical studies led to the start of her professional career as a member of the San Francisco Opera Chorus, but the draw of pop music, cabaret and jazz was too strong. Whitfield has performed around the world, taking the stage at Carnegie Hall, performing at the White House and appearing on shows ranging from Live with Regis and Kelly and CBS Sunday Morning to A Praire Home Companion and Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz. Accompanied by a stellar trio led by her husband, pianist & arranger Mike Greensill, this special night at SFJAZZ draws from the Great American Songbook, both the great standards and neglected gems.

"For Whitfield, it's always the words, delivered as if she's just chosen them herself. Is she the best singer -- jazz or whatever -- around today? No disagreement here. " — Village Voice
