CJ Chenier & The Red Hot Louisiana Band

The Summer Sessions week of dance parties kicks off with a rollicking, Cajun-fueled bang as zydeco superstar C.J. Chenier brings his Red Hot Louisiana Band for a spicy night of Creole dance music. Son of Clifton Chenier, the pioneering artist known universally as the “King of Zydeco, C.J. is the true heir to the throne, instilling his music with the breathless energy and feel-good danceability that marks the best of the Bayou. Originally drawn to R&B, Chenier played keyboards and saxophone in Top 40 bands around his hometown of Port Arthur, Texas before answering his father’s call and joining the Red Hot Louisiana Band, eventually taking over leadership following the elder Chenier’s death in 1987. Since then, Chenier has reigned as a towering figure in zydeco, headlining the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival numerous times and working with artists including Paul Simon, who featured the accordionist on his smash 1990 Rhythm of the Saints album and tour. He’s recorded nine albums for the Arhoolie and Alligator labels, culminating in his GRAMMY-nominated World Village release, Can’t Sit Down. This year, Chenier accepted the GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award on behalf of his late father.
