The Third Stream
The Third Stream
Jazz has always danced between influences, including Afro-Caribbean rhythm, American born blues, and European based harmony, to name a few. While jazz is steeped in the American sounds of the blues, many composers and performers looked to the sounds of modern classical music for inspiration, borrowing heavily from composers like Debussy, Ravel, Stravinsky and others to create the so called "Third Stream."
In class four, we'll listen to music that consciously tries to blur stylistic lines, embracing the best elements of both musical cultures. From Charles Ives to Bill Frisell, we'll look at the broadening definition of jazz.
