Fall 2011 Staff Picks

Randall Kline

As the artistic director at SFJAZZ, I can heartily recommend 36 out of 36 shows. So when I send out the "Randall's Picks" email every season, it's difficult to select just 13. Now I have to whittle down to just five. Impossible! But, under duress, here they are...

      Friday, October 28, 8:00pm
      at Paramount Theatre

Serbo-Croatian Bregovic brings his wild pan-Balkan Weddings and Funerals Orchestra back to SFJAZZ. The last performance had 3,000 people up dancing. This is a happening. Like nothing you've seen or heard.

      Saturday, October 22, 7:00pm & 9:00pm
      at Herbst Theatre

Chamber jazz of the highest order. Long-time collaborators in a rare duo setting. West Coast debut.

      Saturday, September 17, 8:00pm
      at Herbst Theatre

A true American icon. He was instrumental (!) in defining R&B at Stax/Volt. You'll hear "Green Onions" and music from his latest album, The Road From Memphis

      Friday, October 14, 8:00pm
      at Paramount Theatre

The Brazilian superstar, with over 20 million albums sold, returns to her samba roots, with her new project, Canibalia. This is her first Bay Area appearance in over five years.

      Saturday, September 24, 7:00pm & 9:00pm
      at Marines' Memorial Theatre

Solo and in duet with bassist Larry Grenadier, this is a rare opportunity to hear a jazz guitar virtuoso in such an intimate setting.
