Fall 2011 Staff Picks

Rebeca Mauleón

Asking anyone to choose only five of these magnificent artists is somewhat of a “Sophie’s Choice” for this music lover. The roster of pioneers and legends, genre-defying young upstarts and global renegades on our fall line-up is akin to a candy store of jazz delicacies, so I will resort to making my choices based on deeply personal connections.

As a pianist I would not have evolved were it not for the influence of Tyner and his rich palette of delicious “quartal” harmony and ever-so-cool piano “voicings.” Tyner's compositions also strike a strong Impressionistic chord with me (no pun intended); my favs include "Passion Dance" and "Search for Peace."

Right along with Tyner in crafting a distinct presence in modern jazz vernacular is the dreamy sound of Wayne Shorter. Probably one of my favorite saxophonist-composers, plus he called me "Becky" when I asked for his autograph at the old Tower Records in Northbeach (remember that watering hole??)! Favorite tunes: "Footprints" and "Speak No Evil."

Undeniably talented and no less a breath of fresh air and inspiration to millions of young women in an otherwise “boys club” of a profession, Esperanza – whose name means “hope” – continues to reinvent herself and the genre she represents. She is, quite simply, a “bad-ass!”

      Sunday, October 2, 2:00pm
at Gould Theater, Legion of Honor

Genius is such a mystery, and more and more elusive in modern music these days. When I first heard Eldar I was dumbfounded, as were most of my fellow pianists. How can someone so brilliant and technically flawless convey such rich emotion? Say what you will about genius and madness – Eldar is not to be missed.

Seeing Daniela live is a virtual smorgasbord of sights and sounds. In addition to her use of multi-media, everyone in her band sings, plays and dances – they even throw in a little capoeira! A Brazilian rock star with jazz leanings, Mercury is a powerhouse of a songwriter and bandleader, and a consummate entertainer.
