JANE MONHEIT (9:30 PM - 11 PM, SFCM)
A remarkable musician silken voice and masterful sense of swing, Jane Monheit has always had one foot in jazz and one in cabaret. The GRAMMY-nominated vocalist has come a long way since her debut at the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 International Vocal Competition, and performances at the White House, on The Late Show with David Letterman, The View and The Today Show showcased a performer whose appeal extends far beyond the jazz stage.

The talented Monheit has recorded twelve albums, was a GRAMMY nominee for her 2004 Sony release Taking a Chance on Love, and has worked with Terence Blanchard, Ivan Lins, Michael Bublé, David Benoit, Tom Harrell, and Harold Mabern. She made her SFJAZZ debut during the 2001 Spring Season on a bill with NEA Jazz Master Dianne Reeves, and has appeared seven times over the years. Most of Monheit’s concerts feature a cross-section of Great American Songbook standards, treasures from the Brazilian tradition, and her jazz-based interpretations of pop gems.

The stylistic breadth of her fourteen albums clearly shows a love for timeless standards, the Broadway stage, the Brazilian pop of Ivan Lins, and the hits of Ella Fitzgerald, Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Paul Williams, and Judy Garland. Her most recent Club 44 Records release, Come What May, is a glorious embrace of the Great American Songbook, and she released a holiday album, The Merriest, in 2022.

SFJAZZ HIGH SCHOOL ALL STARS (9 PM - 9:30 PM, SFCM)
Also featured at the SFCM in the Barbro Osher Recital Hall and leading us back to the SFJAZZ Center for the After Party, we have members of our very own SFJAZZ High School All Stars. The SFJAZZ High School All Stars is a pre-professional training program for Bay Area high school age jazz musicians. Comprised of two ensembles - the Big Band and the Combo - the All-Stars rehearse and perform throughout the school year at the SFJAZZ Center, receive mentorship and clinics with leading jazz professionals, record a professional studio album, and appear at prestigious music festivals and competitions.

DUMPSTAPHUNK (11 PM - 1 AM, MINER AUDITORIUM)
Later back at the SFJAZZ Center the After Party features New Orleans funk band Dumpstaphunk in Miner Auditorium from 1030pm to 1am. There will be other performances throughout the Center at that time, including platinum-selling songwriter, producer, composer John Michael Rouchell in Joe Henderson Lab, New Orleans-based DJ Soul Sister, in the Grand Lobby and Bay Area pianist Kev Choice on the Fisher Family Lobby. Immerse yourself in music and dancing, indulge in open bars, fine wines, and enjoy late night bites by Paula Le Duc Fine Catering throughout the SFJAZZ Center.

The SFJAZZ Gala is a benefit for SFJAZZ’s artistic and education programs with the goal of advancing the art form of jazz in the Bay Area and beyond.

ABOUT THE MUSIC

Dumpstaphunk
Miner Auditorium
Dumpstaphunk is one of the finest and funkiest bands ever to arise from the Crescent City. Born on the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival stage in 2001, and descended from Neville (Ivan Neville & Ian Neville) and Meters family bloodlines, these soldiers of funk ignite a deep, gritty groove that dares listeners not to move. Their performances combine ingenious musicianship with complex funk, rock, and jazz arrangements, accompanied by soulful melodies and Big Easy traditions. Over the years, they have shared bills with the likes of George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic, the Rolling Stones, and the Dave Matthews Band.

John Michael Rouchell & Friends
Joe Henderson Lab
New Orleans-based composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist John Michael Rouchell has collaborated with a dizzying range of contemporary innovators, including the celebrated New Orleans bands Galactic and Tank and the Bangas, Oakland-based rapper G-Eazy, and jazz/gospel drummer and vocalist Jamison Ross. His career highlights include a stint touring with George Clinton and Parliament-Funkadelic as a 15-year-old—when, in his own words, “I had a short crewcut, and it was a gag of this tiny little white kid [who] plays guitar like Jimi Hendrix.”

DJ Soul Sister in the Grand Lobby
A native of New Orleans, DJ Soul Sister is an internationally known DJ artist whose broadcast programs and live performances feature her personal collection of thousands of vinyl records. A legend of the NOLA airwaves, she has hosted her show Soul Power on WWOZ-FM for nearly 30 years. As a performance DJ, she was the first winner of New Orleans’ prestigious Big Easy Entertainment Award for “Best DJ.” Among her many performance highlights are sets at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and opening spots for the likes of the Roots, Bootsy Collins, the Meters, and George Clinton—who also personally invited her to DJ his 71st birthday party.
