Baaba Maal; Cheb i Sabbah & 1002 Nights
Friday, June 16 • 8pm

Masonic Center

“[Maal is] a giant of world music, blowing away audiences all over the globe.” — Rolling Stone

"Egged on by his blind singing partner and mentor Monsour Seck and a duo of hyper-kinetic dancers, Maal delivered the kind of show that makes skeptics into believers and fans into rabid adherents."
Isthmus (Madison, WI)

This Friday night, the Bay Area will witness one of the most important figures in world music today, Senegalese pop sensation, Baaba Maal. In the BBC’s words: “[His] live performances…are magnificent. Alongside Youssou N'Dour he is Senegal’s biggest international star.”

Sharing this culture-crossing bill is Algerian-born, Bay Area–dwelling Cheb i Sabbah, premiering his new music-and-dance ensemble, 1002 Nights. Sabbah appears fresh from this week’s release of his latest CD, La Ghriba, featured on the front page of iTunes’ World Music new releases.

“[His] virtuosity beams forth from the first note of any performance.”
The New York Times

As on their breathtaking 2005 CD duo debut, Dreamtales, Brazilian-born singer Claudia Villela and American piano maestro Kenny Werner team up for a set of daring invention and crystalline beauty. "Dreamtales should come with a warning," JazzTimes wrote, “Alert! Your senses are about to be brilliantly arrested.”

Last week’s question was:
In West African culture, the lineage of traditional musicians and bards is often referred to by the European-derived term "griots." What is the more commonly used term for these musicians in the territories corresponding to the former Mali Empire (or Malinké Empire)?

Answer:
Jeli or djeli

Congratulations to Arden Wong of San Francisco who was the first person to send in the correct answer
! The Jazz Trivia Contest will take a brief hiatus while we refill the cabinet of prizes with more cool, jazzy loot. Stay tuned for the contest’s triumphant return in the coming weeks!
