Keepnews Brings Eyewitness Perspective to 'Monk Project'
As a writer, producer, label head, and archivist, Orrin Keepnews has played a vital role in promoting jazz. Now, Concord Music Group honors that lifelong commitment with its Orrin Keepnews Collection. You can read more about the collection at JazzTimes or check out some of the classic albums at E-music:
Thelonious Monk – Thelonious Monk Plays Duke Ellington, Monk’s first album for Riverside was a breakthrough date for the pianist and the label.
Joe Henderson – Power to the People, featuring Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Jack DeJohnette. Keepnews calls it “some of the most wonderfully, effectively professional music I have ever been involved with.”
Keepnews will be the featured speaker at our upcoming SFJAZZ Members Listening Party,“Monk’s Moods: Behind the Scenes with Thelonious Monk.” It’s not too late to become an SFJAZZ Member and take advantage of this unique benefit. Join SFJAZZ Today!
Also, be sure to hear Keepnews speak before two upcoming Monk Project events: the May 4 Monk/Coltrane Carnegie Hall Concert reinterpretation featuring Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, and Brian Blade; and the May 19 Monk Town Hall Revisited show recreation by Jason Moran, T.S. Monk, and a stellar cast of sidemen. And look for an interview with Keepnews in the May SFJAZZ E-news.

Ornette Honored with Pulitzer
SFJAZZ congratulates jazz saxophonist Ornette Coleman, who this week was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his most recent album, Sound Grammar. Coleman has performed numerous memorable shows at the San Francisco Jazz Festival and SFJAZZ Spring Season, and his compositions made up half of the SFJAZZ Collective’s inaugural repertoire.
E-News Coming at You Monthly
Starting in May, the SFJAZZ e-News will shift from weekly publication to a monthly format, with each issue featuring more articles, multimedia, and links to jazzy spots on the web. In May, we’ll also unveil an all-new SFJAZZ e-News section on sjfazz.org, with extended e-News features, e-News archives and more.
The e-News will take a break for the rest of April while we switch over to the new format. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear them.
Thanks for reading and we’ll see you in May.
Jazz is all about give and take and we take that open exchange of ideas very seriously here at SFJAZZ. To that end, we've opened up the SFJAZZ Inbox for any questions, concerns, suggestions, or compliments readers care to pass our way. Send us an e-mail with your thoughts.
