Romance Your Sweetie
Chocolates, champagne, and flowers are nice treats, but romance wouldn’t stand a chance without the power of song. In honor of Valentines Day, treat your sweetheart to one of the many sophisticated vocalists gracing the SFJAZZ Spring Season:
Known for her brassy disposition and show-stopping vocals, the legendary Etta James brings her powerhouse Roots Band to the Masonic Center on March 10. Bay Area Bluesman Joe Louis Walker kicks off the night with a solo acoustic set.

| Madeline Eastman, jazz vocalist |
Urbane and chic, Freddy Cole and Madeline Eastman (4/7) are a dream double-bill for lovers of jazz vocals. Cole brings a bluesy flair to the traditional piano trio sound, while Eastman delivers an inventive, intelligent update of the jazz songbook.
Steeped in the lovelorn romanticism of her home country, Portugal’s Dulce Pontes (4/20) boasts a powerful voice and an eclectic spirit. The international superstar brings a repertoire that includes the bittersweet fado and collaborative works with recent Lifetime Oscar winner, composer Ennio Morricone.

| Angelique Kidjo wows audiences with her cosmopolitan vocal stylings. |
For those who prefer a bit of polyrhythm with their romance, Beninese vocalist and songwriter Angelique Kidjo (5/12) works a melting pot of African, Brazilian, and Caribbean beats into her global pop stylings.
Sasha Dobson’s (6/3) new album, Modern Romance , is a beguiling mix of Brazilian and folk rhythms, with heartfelt songs that work by insinuation rather than inundation.

While we’re correcting ourselves, the SFJAZZ trivia meister bows his head in shame for a mistake on last week’s question. We asked “What late, great jazz pianist’s birthday is February 9?” The answer was Bill Evans. Straightforward enough, you’d think. Except, as E-news reader Jean Merkelo pointed out, the Bill Evans born on February 9th isn’t the pianist but another Miles Davis alum of the same name. Bill Evans the saxophonist is a multi-Grammy-nominated artist who has pushed the boundaries of jazz, drawing reggae, Brazilian, hip-hop, and bluegrass into his musical mix.
For her effort—and her correct answer—Jean wins a handsome SFJAZZ Hoodie. Now for this week’s doubly-vetted trivia question:
